Hardware DNA

The character came first.

Built from the original MEGAfm — not merely inspired by it. VMEGAfm runs the original firmware at its core. Its analogue path combines behaviour modelled from the original Mark I schematics with a compact GRU trained on matched audio captures of the real output stage.

Together they reproduce the level-dependent compression, saturation and time-dependent fuzzy response that give the hardware its unmistakable character — without pretending two analogue machines are ever sample-for-sample identical.

Version 1.3 workflow

Bring your hardware banks with you.

Import complete original MEGAfm preset banks directly from MIDI SysEx (.syx) files. VMEGAfm translates the hardware data into its streamlined ADSR and voice architecture, adapting envelopes and other differences where needed.

Imported patches may not sound identical to the hardware, but the conversion is designed to retain their musical structure, balance and character as closely as practical.

The practical details.

Is this the MEGAfm hardware synthesizer?

No. VMEGAfm is built from the original MEGAfm. The original firmware runs at its core, while the analogue output combines behaviour modelled from the Mark I hardware schematics with a compact GRU trained on audio captures of the real output stage. The desktop edition runs standalone or as AU/VST3; the separately sold iPad app runs standalone or as AUv3.

Can I import presets from my MEGAfm hardware?

Yes. Import an original MEGAfm MIDI SysEx (.syx) bank and its 50 presets are added to your user library. Because VMEGAfm uses a streamlined ADSR and voice architecture, imported patches are translated rather than reproduced byte-for-byte and may not sound identical to the hardware.

Which FM chip models are included?

Choose MEGAFM MKI (YM2612) for the grittier original character or MEGAFM MKII (YM3438) for a cleaner, crisper response. Your selection is remembered between sessions.

Which plug-in formats are included?

macOS includes Audio Unit and VST3. Windows includes VST3. Both platforms also include a standalone instrument.

How many computers can I use?

Your personal licence can be registered on the computers you personally own or use. The licence itself must not be shared.
